For The Least Of Our Brethren

It was Professor Wole Soyinka who said in his
book titled -The Man Died- that "The Man Dies in
him who keeps quiet in the face of oppression."
But permit me to rephrase this quote to suit the
circumstances with which I am compelled to pen
this piece, by saying also that "The Man Also
Dies In Him Who Keeps Quiet In The Face Of
Injustice And Lawlessness."
Dear Reader, this write up bothers on the
infringement of the Human Rights of a fellow
Student by a distinguished member of this
intellectual community in the rank of a Doctor, I
am bringing this issue to the Court Of Public
Opinion for us to weight in and to make
contributions.
Yesterday, October 31st 2017, I received a call
from a friend who requested my intervention in a
case of a Human Right Abuse and Threat To Life
of a Uite, to which I am responding to, having
met with the victim and quizzed him thoroughly
as well as studying his Statement, I am more
than convinced on the need for us to Speak Out
with One Voice as Students and Well Meaning
Individuals.
The incident took place on Saturday, 28 October
2017 in the Afternoon when the Victim (Tobi,
Geology Department) was approached in Tedder
Hall by one Mayowa, (a Master's Student who he
had interacted with from time to time) the
individual in question cajoled him to come
outside the Hall where Tobi was watching the
weekend premier league games to ask some
questions bothering on a theft incident that took
place the week before and before he knew what
was going on, Tobi was bundled into a waiting
Car by some thugs who drove him down to
House 12, Sankore Road, there he was beaten
mercilessly with no help in sight, while the
beating was ongoing the guys put a call through
to an anonymous receiver whom they addressed
as "Prof" (hence the initial conclusion that he
was a Professor) that they had the "Boy" with
them.
After much beating, under the disguise of taking
him to change his torn cloths, they drove him to
Agbowo shopping complex, there he was stripped
stark naked and he received another round of
beatings from another set of Agbowo thugs
there, he was whipped, Bottles were used on his
head, including the use of the butt of a lighted
stick of cigarette, all this was done without a
single piece of clothing on him.
After going through the horrible ordeal, he was
taken back into school to meet the Man who
sent them, (who we believe was the anonymous
receiver of the earlier call of the thugs) Alas! It
was Dr. Ayoola of Statistics Department, (His
identity was verified today after a visit to his
department) Who in turn, took him to the Abefele
Station to report a Case of Theft and accusing
Tobi as his prime suspect.
No doubt the Case would be investigated by the
Security Unit, but I must personally express my
sadness to the fact that a Student of this
university can be abducted and taken through
the Gates of UI, also I must also state that by
this event that it is very clear that we are not
safe on Campus and that I myself can also be
abducted and beaten up by such elements for
bringing this up to public consciousness.
This also brings to questions the kind of persons
we have in the academia, I am still curious as to
why a Doctor would breach all protocols to inflict
harm on a Student, on the assumption of guilt.
What if Tobi had died from the beatings he
received from those thugs, we would not know a
thing and would just assume that he is missing
and the Doctor would definitely cover his tracks.
Also the fact that the Doctor also went to the
Abefele Station to report the case of theft also
shows the audacity with which he believes the
system would over look his assault on Tobi and
still go ahead to punish Tobi.
I am writing this to draw the attention of the
larger community, please let this get to the
attention of our Father, the Vice Chancellor, a
university inquiry must be made into this
incidence and the Doctor be punished if found
culpable.
Failure of the appropriate quarters to do right by
Tobi, would necessitate us involving the National
Media and News Platforms. Of course, legal
actions would be initiated before the week runs
out.
Please Reader, I also need your input on what
you feel should be the first step of action that he
should take, this case as become ours to attend
to. Also the support of all Student bodies and
Legal practitioners is needed.
In my next release, I'll be publishing his
Statement and Pictures of the wounds sustained.
NB: If You have similar cases of Abuses,
Molestation and Attacks from any One in the
University System and You're willing to speak
out, reach out and let's correct the system and
the culture of impunity in our own little way.
Also let me unequivocally apologize to all
Professors of the Statistics Department who no
doubt will be offended by such an error in
identity, that there is no malicious intent to
tarnish anyone's image but an honest attempt to
speak out against an anomaly that they also
would frown against.
I Am Simply Doing This For The Least Of Our
Brethren... Our Voices Cannot Be Gagged.

What is the meaning of the word Yoruba?

What is the meaning of the word Yoruba? Have you always thought about where the word Yoruba originated from? Have you heard many misconception and misapprehension that left you baffled? That was what got hold of me too so I decided to dig into it. What is the meaning of Yoruba? Does it have any inclination to our language? This is a thought provoking topic that needs profound reasoning and intense research for better understanding. It is time we faced the monster that keeps trailing us whom many try to ignore. In Yoruba culture, appellation is often derived from a prerequisite factor or foretelling. For fact telling, some name their child Owolabi hoping the child will bring fortune to the family, another one is that almost all Yoruba towns have their names derived from an event or a factor as illustrated in; Eba-Odan – Ibadan, Abe Okuta Olumo – Abeokuta and Ibi ti Ile ti yo – Oyo and so forth. However, these factors appear not partake in the word Yoruba. I asked a lot of people to
