The Ibadan empire With Ijaiye disposed of, Ibadan was free to consolidate its empire in the east. Between 1847 and 1870, large areas of Ijesha, Igbomina, Ekiti and Akoko came under Ibadan control (Akintoye, 1971: 33-75). Initially, this was in response to the threat from Ilorin. Some of the Osun towns like Osogbo had willingly come under Ibadan protection. More force was used in the subjugation of the towns further to the east. The Ijesha proved difficult to control. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has called on Nigerian youths to utilise the productive period of their lives, noting that while time waits for no one, obtaining a degree certificate does not always translate to success in life. Osinbajo spoke at the 10th convocation of the Lead City University, Ibadan where 590 students were awarded first degree certificates in various disciplines on Thursday. Among them, 39 students graduated in the first class category. Miss Mary Olukorede was adjudged the best graduating female while Amedu Anthony was announced as the best graduating male student. I don’t need high chiefs’ endorsement to install chiefs —Olubadan by Olufemi Atoyebi, Ibadan The Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, has said he does not need the endorsement of the high chiefs before he can confer honorary traditional titles on recipients. Our correspondent learnt that the monarch will on November 11, 2017, honour the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, with the title of Agbaakin Afiwagboye of Ibadan land, and others. This development, observers noted, could further deepen the crisis between the Olubadan and some of his high chiefs, who were elevated by the Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi to the status of kings recently.
