Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Jumoke Akinjide, is set to negotiate with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged fraud of N650 million.

Her counsel, Bolaji Ayorinde (SAN), told a Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday that they were prepared to explore the option for the refund of the cash.

The EFCC had on January 16, 2018 arraigned Akinjide and two others for allegedly receiving N650 million from former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke in the build-up to the 2015 general elections.

The anti-graft agency claimed that the funds were proceeds of unlawful activities, adding that Akinjide and others handled the N650 million cash without going through any financial institution, contrary to the provisions of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act.

Those charged along with Akinjide were Ayo Adeseun and Olanrewaju Otiti. They have, however, pleaded not guilty to the 24-count charge filed against them.

The court had fixed February 6, 2018 for commencement of trial.

But yesterday, Ayorinde told the trial judge, Muslim Hassan, that his client intended to explore an amicable settlement of the case with the EFCC.

What is the meaning of the word Yoruba? Have you always thought about where the word Yoruba originated from? Have you heard many misconception and misapprehension that left you baffled? That was what got hold of me too so I decided to dig into it. What is the meaning of Yoruba? Does it have any inclination to our language? This is a thought provoking topic that needs profound reasoning and intense research for better understanding. It is time we faced the monster that keeps trailing us whom many try to ignore. In Yoruba culture, appellation is often derived from a prerequisite factor or foretelling. For fact telling, some name their child Owolabi hoping the child will bring fortune to the family, another one is that almost all Yoruba towns have their names derived from an event or a factor as illustrated in; Eba-Odan – Ibadan, Abe Okuta Olumo – Abeokuta and Ibi ti Ile ti yo – Oyo and so forth. However, these factors appear not partake in the word Yoruba. I asked a ...

I don’t need high chiefs’ endorsement to install chiefs —Olubadan

I don’t need high chiefs’ endorsement to install chiefs —Olubadan by Olufemi Atoyebi, Ibadan The Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, has said he does not need the endorsement of the high chiefs before he can confer honorary traditional titles on recipients. Our correspondent learnt that the monarch will on November 11, 2017, honour the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, with the title of Agbaakin Afiwagboye of Ibadan land, and others. This development, observers noted, could further deepen the crisis between the Olubadan and some of his high chiefs, who were elevated by the Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi to the status of kings recently. The new kings had opposed the move by the Olubadan to confer traditional titles on Shittu and others on Saturday (tomorrow). But speaking through his Director, Media and Public Affairs, Adeola Oloko, on Thursday, the Olubadan said that he was aware of the high chiefs’ opposition to the ce...
